Great stuff, especially the band tour stuff. I have the 2 Buddy DVD's which is great!! Lot's of Buddy footage throught the years.

I've had many a nights hanging with Freddy Gruber, as I'm sure many of you know is his old friend from when they were little kids. He's told me some stuff about Buddy that I don't think anybody knows. The one thing that I get from Buddy is what one of Buddys trumpet players Ron Konikoff writes on that 1st webpage.

He really wasn't an asshole. He just wanted things his way. I can understand that. He obviously felt that if he was paying someone good money for someone to play in his band, he'd better get his money's worth. With Buddy, it was all about perfection.

I remember a story a friend told me about Weckl. They were both playing a Jazz festival here in California. My friend got the idea that Dave was just being an ass by yelling at one of the sound guys. After I asked Dave about the situation, it was basically a "buddy" thing. With the Dave Weckl band, he likes things "his way". Again... nothing wrong with that. Just some people just don't get it when you're dealing with someone that knows exactly what he's looking for. I guess Buddy just had an "old school" from the streets of New York way of doing things.

No one can say Buddy didn't "earn" his place in the music industry. He worked harder than most did to acheive where he got. Probably the reason why he passed away as soon as he did. He was wound a little tightly lets say.

But you gotta give him credit for being a no B.S., get in your face kinda guy. No computers to hide behind back in those days. You either put up or shut up.

Bless him and Jerry Lewis for that matter. They've both given me a lifetime of joy, wonder, and amusement.

PS... I know some here on HOD have a weird feeling about Freddy. He's a good egg. But on a sour note, he's going thru some scary stuff right now. Weckl put him in touch with some good doctors to handle his health affairs. He's gonna be 79 next B-Day. Something about enlarged limph nodes. Maybe cancer. I'll find out later this week. Me and Dave are trying to get his 71' Firebird up and running so he can enjoy it.

I've played with a sax man that was in one of Buddy's "grown up" bands back in the 60's. He says Buddy was very tough, but at the same time respectful of the other musicians because he knew they were pros and he pushed them to give everything.

Those clips are Buddy ranting at second tier musicians (all he could afford at the time) who didn't understand or respect Buddy's music, and Buddy couldn't get them to play it the way he wanted. They deserved it.
